Science Fiction, Technology and Business: An Unlikely Trio
The worlds of science fiction and technology have always gone hand in hand with each other; after all Star Trek inspired a whole host of technology we use on a daily basis such as the mobile phone. There are no doubts that many scientific and technological breakthroughs have occurred due to science fiction and some improvements too, because just like technology Sci-Fi is always rebooting and changing itself. After all, recently we’ve seen two re-vamped Star Trek films, an announcement of a Star Wars re-boot with three new films and Doctor Who will also be regenerating again come Christmas.
But it’s not just this dynamic duo that fit together like two pieces of a jigsaw, there’s also a third piece and that’s business. It may sound strange but as science fiction evolves and influences technology, allowing it to do things that once were beyond our imagination, businesses have to adapt and incorporate many of these advances to stay afloat. So with items like the tablet, smartphone, and portable technology that includes printers and a range of photocopier for business springing up on the market, it’s easy to see how the regeneration of the Doctor can be applied to businesses.
Small businesses have been in the news quite a lot over the last few months, mainly due to the Government’s schemes to help smaller businesses with a variety of incentives. Small businesses, which were significantly affected by the recession, are also showing signs of re-booting themselves more recently as many SMEs have displayed plans to increase their expenditure and headcount between 2013 and 2014.
But let’s not forget the importance of technology in helping these smaller businesses improving. Inspired by the likes of Star Trek, Star Wars and everything else in between, here’s a list of our top wireless technologies all small business need.
These day to day items may be a quick and convenient way to access social media at home. But for businesses they are now vital as you can email and plan meetings on the move and work from anywhere, which is great for smaller companies with less work staff.
Similarly the smartphone is just as important as the tablet. We may take them for granted in our day to day lives, but when travelling you can stay in touch with the office via phone call, text, email or even video messaging. It can also work as an excellent Wi-Fi hotspot if you need to use a tablet or note pad.
If you’re on the move the last thing you want to do is forget the paperwork you need; however stuff like this happens. But if you have your laptop, tablet or phone with you then you can easily generate a hotspot and get printing wherever you are.
